First Habitat for Humanity golf tourney a success

May 11 , 2009 - The 1st Annual Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fredericksburg Golf Tournament was held at Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course on May 9,2009. Thirteen four-man teams played in a scramble format tournament. Team scores were based on their handicap to level the playing field. Lunch, snacks and a pizza dinner were served to the players. There was a silent auction and a raffle as well as prizes.
 “We had tons of fun, there were lots of prizes and thanks to recent rain; the golf course was lush and green. I look forward to playing in next year’s tournament,” said golfer Dane Batterton.

Habitat raised approximately $6500. thanks to the players, volunteers the many prize and auction donations and hole sponsors.

2nd Place: Patty Jones, Dani O'Neill, Shelly Ross & Kim Sexton
3rd Place: Charlie Barrett; Scott Elliot; Donald Higginbotham & Jerry Hominick
4th Place: Dane Baterton; Martin Kuykendall; Eugene Smith & Tom Suing
5th Place: March Compton; Dave Davenport; Jeff DeForge & Mark Hallman

"We were so excited at the interest in our first tournament,” said Melodi Frederick, Habitat President. “We had three teams sign up the day of the tournament and a group that had already played that morning wanted to play and support Habitat. We look forward to our tournament next year.”

The local Habitat group has also kicked off “Operation Re-Habitat” and on May 30 will hav e the rededication of the recently remodeled house on Cherry Street. The next fundraising event will be in the fall.
